019 Challenge Re-Visions - The Edwin & Mary Bloomfield Coverlet
The Quilter's Guild website now has new information on the Specialist Group challenge and a leaflet available which shows close-ups of the coverlet to aid the creative process for those interpreting it for the challenge. Cheryl Kirby has had a good look at the leaflet and suggested the following thought provoking list of ideas:
I have compiled some general ideas, any of which could spark a design investigation and will, I hope, encourage many of you to take up this challenge.
Looking at the visual images of the quilt, including details, I came up with these pointers:
Colour: includes red, blue, cream, pink, green and brown.
Symmetry and pattern: radiating from the centre; sets of 4 or 8; different cross motifs; framed text; hexagons; diamonds; rope and swag border; trompe l’oeil effect; floral and stripes; double border on one side; printed patterns; appliqué floral and bird motifs; geometric shapes interspersed with irregular motifs.
Reading the accompanying text prompted these thoughts:
Date 1850 (Victorian); family contacts, shared fabrics with a companion piece, central star design, pieced diamonds; Inscription: In Memoriam, Dedicated to mourning parents, Framed panels, Embroidered text, Biblical quotations, Appliqué, Maltese cross, Fringe edging.
Any of these observations could lead to exploration in one of several directions:
Memorial quilts, use of text, colour studies, painted or printed pattern backgrounds, stamps or stencils designed from any of the motifs. In addition, one could mention samplers with cross stitch or other embroidered text, pictorial images, collaboration by sharing fabrics in companion pieces and, for pattern lovers, Geometry versus Irregularity.
I know there are many more, so please follow this link and step up to the challenge!
